ChatGPT and Emotional Intelligence: Progressing Toward AGI?

Recent studies propose that involving OpenAI’s ChatGPT with emotional prompts can enhance the quality of its responses. Generative AI is progressing toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), demonstrating human-like capabilities.
Generative AI tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have become integral to various facets of our lives, aiding individuals in achieving personal objectives and streamlining professional tasks. Nevertheless, users frequently require assistance in obtaining the desired responses from these AI models. A recent study conducted by Microsoft, William and Mary, and Asian research centers sheds light on a potential solution: incorporating emotional intelligence into prompts.
The research investigated whether large language models (LLMs) powering generative AI tools like ChatGPT can demonstrate emotional intelligence. In this context, emotional intelligence denotes the ability to comprehend and handle information infused with emotions, utilizing it for cognitive tasks ranging from problem-solving to behavior regulation. The experiment utilized two sets of prompts—one standard and another enriched with emotional language. Tasks spanned from ‘Rephrase the sentence in formal language’ to knowledge-based inquiries such as “What happens to you if you eat watermelon seeds?” and “How long should you wait before filing a missing person report?”
Surprisingly, the results indicated that large language models (LLMs), including ChatGPT, not only comprehend emotional cues but also demonstrate enhanced performance when prompted with emotional language. The emotional prompts resulted in an 8% overall performance improvement in specific tasks and a noteworthy 10.9% improvement in knowledge-based queries, as evaluated by a sample of 106 humans.

Why does it matter?

The findings of the study contribute to the ongoing discourse on AI capabilities and offer practical insights for users aiming to elicit optimal responses from generative AI tools. Understanding their subtleties and refining our interactions becomes crucial for unlocking their full potential as we continue to integrate these tools into our daily lives. AI experts recommend assigning ChatGPT a specific role, providing ample context, breaking down the desired output into steps, and being as specific as possible. This breakthrough suggests that generative AI might be one step closer to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a milestone where AI can exhibit complex human capabilities such as common sense and consciousness.
